How Does $19 A Month For All You Can Eat Wireless Sound?

Republic WirelessIt’s November 19th, 2012 and a small company by the name of Republic Wireless just opened up its doors to the public.  Well, Republic has existed for a little over a year but they just now closed their private beta and opened the doors to all who wish to have unlimited phone service for a very low $19 a month.  Republic is an MVNO (mobile virtual network provider) provider as they don’t actually own a cellular network because they are piggy-backing off of Sprint’s 3G network.  So as long as you are okay with Sprint coverage then you will be okay with Republic Wireless coverage.  In a nutshell, Republic is offering unlimited talk, text and data, all for just $19 a month.  No overages, contracts, or hidden charges.  Just great phone service at the lowest monthly rate in America.

Does that sound unreal?  Maybe it’s because we’ve all been taught that high-priced phone bills is all that there is.  Republic Wireless is here to change our way of thinking.  How can Republic Wireless charge so little when all the others charge at least 4Xs what Republic is proposing, you may ask?  Well, Republic can charge so little for its services because it is betting that most customers will be using Wi-Fi most of the time.  Also as I mentioned above, they don’t own those cell towers, they simply just rent them.  That means less overhead and since they are buying less bandwidth, then they don’t pay much rent.

If you are wondering it will cost you $259 to get started.  That includes the Motorola Defy XT for $249 and a one time start-up charge of $10.  After that, your bill will be just $19 plus taxes.  All in all, this sounds awesome and if you don’t care about 4G or what phone you will have then there is no reason to not go with Republic Wireless.

Daily Byte

This here post will be a collection of random thoughts that I have had recently but haven’t been able to put together a full-fledged article.  Here we go.  Feel free to chime in if you feel the same or if I am completely off the line.

T-Mobile will officially get the iPhone in 2013

Here are a  couple of reasons as to why I think that the next iPhone release will include T-Mobile.  A few months back, T-Mobile started these ads where they were courting iPhone users.  This all began when T-Mobile once again offered unlimited plans that included unlimited data.  They were using this to court iPhone users that were coming from At&t.  Those users that upgraded to the new iPhone probably sold their old iPhone to somebody who now needs a contract.  About a month later, those ads were pulled for no apparent reason.  It could just be that they were not doing their job, but I think that it was something else.  I think that T-Mobile finally had a breakthrough in negotiations with Tim Cook’s boys.  To further my speculation, T-Mobile is projected to finish re-farming most of its 1900Mhz Spectrum to UMTS/HSPA/HSPA+ this year.  Which coincidentally is required to run 4G on the iPhone.

Deal Alert: Sprint LG Optimus G $149.99 With 2 Year Contract

Were you thinking of ordering the very best and latest in Android superphones but didn’t have or didn’t want to pay $200 for it?  Have no fear, Wirefly is here.  Wirefly has Sprint’s LG Optimus G up for pre-order for the rock bottom price of $149.99.  That’s a whole $50 less than Sprint.  Phone ships on November 11 so if you were expecting to receive it on release day then you should probably look elsewhere.  The good news is that it is the exact same device that Sprint is selling for $50 more.

As always, when ordering with 3rd party stores, make sure that you know what you are getting into.  With Wirefly as with most 3rd party stores, you have to be on contract for at least 161 days otherwise you end up paying full price.  I already mentioned that it won’t be at your doorstep on the 11th.  Also, they usually try to sell you other stuff, i.e, insurance, and accessory packages.  Sprint usually tries the same but aren’t as annoying.  The insurance ($70/yr) is actually worth it as it ends up being cheaper than Sprint’s Total Protection Plan ($8/month or $96/yr).  In comparison and in theory, Sprints insurance is quite inferior to Wirefly’s.  With a $100 deductible, Sprint will replace your lost or damaged phone with a refurbished unit.  With Wirefly, you get the same coverage but in addition, there is no deductible and they provide you with a brand new phone.  The last thing to take into consideration is that Sprint’s insurance is actually quite reputable.  While I had never heard of Wirefly’s insurance until I ordered a phone through them.

In case you were wondering, I am not in any way affiliated with Wirefly.  I just purchased a phone from them.  Also, if anybody has had any experiences with Wirefly, I would love to hear from them.  I want to make sure that I did not jump the gun as I had already done so with Sprint.  I pre-ordered the phones with Sprint and then I saw that I could save $50 off of each phone that I got.  I got two by the way.  One for me and one for my wife.  This is going to be a huge upgrade from our original EVOs.

LG Nexus 4 Battery User Replaceable

Well we just read some very good news.  Apparently, a Reddit user by the name of  ComedyMonger got a hold of some information and pictures to go along with his information that show how easy it is to replace the  LG Nexus 4′s battery.  Apparently, the back cover is easy to remove and then it is just 2 screws that hold the battery in place.  One thing to note is that the antennas for WiFi, GPS, and cellular connectivity are housed by the back cover.  While replacing the battery on the fly is not completely possible, it should be almost painless.

So does this mean that the LG Optimus G is just as easy to crack open?  We certainly hope so.  Does this also open up the possibility that we will see third-party vendors release bigger batteries or does the fact that the antennas are built-in completely eliminate those possibilities?  Here is to hoping that moving the radios is just as easy as removing the battery.  We’ve reached out to Brian Klug of Anandtech for more information. Apple Gives In And Reposts Revised ‘Samsung Did Not Copy’ Statement

Early this morning Apple reposted a revised court ordered “Samsung did not copy” statement.  On October 25, Apple posted a link (Samsung/Apple UK judgement) in very small text on the footer of Apple.com that sent the visitor that was lucky enough to see it to a page that described the “Samsung did not copy” statement.  This wording and placement was not up to par with the UK courts and Apple was given 48 hours to fix their statement.  Apple simply reposted what it published to newspapers earlier in the week.  The statement simply says, that Samsung’s tablet design was not copied from Apple’s iPad.  Read the full statement below.

Poll: What Phone Are You Most Excited For?

You don’t have to be a tech fanatic to be excited about all the great flagships that have been released or will be released in the next few weeks.  Just weeks ago, Apple released their best iPhone yet.  Looking to outdo anything that Apple brought to the table, LG announced the LG Optimus G.  Samsung released the powerful and unique Galaxy Note 2.  We’re all patiently waiting on the Nokia Lumia 920.  I don’t know about you but I am super excited to try out Blackberry’s Blackberry 10 Series phones.  What are you most excited for?

UPDATE-LG Optimus G coming to At&t November 2 and Sprint November 11.

Here we go, the most talked about handset this side of any iPhone and the Galaxy S III is about to arrive on US shores in the not so distant future.  Earlier in the day, At&t announced that they would release the LG Optimus G on Nov. 2nd with preorders starting tomorrow, 10/16/2012.  As you know, the specs include a Snapdragon S4 Pro processor clocked at 1.5GHz with 2 GB of RAM to help the handset zoom.  A 4.7-inch 1,280 x 768 True HD IPS PLUS display, Android 4.0, and an 8 MP shooter ’round the back.

Not to be outdone, Sprint, later in the day, announced that they too will be releasing the Optimus G on Nov. 11nd.  This includes Sprint’s upgrade to a 13 MP shooter instead of the 8 MP shooter that At&t’s will sports.

MetroPCS Investors Sue over T-Mobile Deal.

Well that was quick.  Just as Sprint had a major announcement regarding it being acquired by SoftBank, MetroPCS investors have a major gripe with their merger with Deutsche Telecom’s T-Mobile.  Apparently, they feel that T-Mobile is undervaluing Metro’s value and shortchanging the shareholders.  Because of this, the investors have filed a lawsuit to block the merger.
